Who We Are

SFBAE was founded in Dec 1998 by Dr. Saumitra SenGupta when he and a handful of students and professionals met at the offices of Dr. Darlene Russ-Eft to socialize and discuss evaluation. Over the years this small informal grouping grew into SFBAE.
As SFBAE and its events grew, we realized that we needed to improve our infrastructure in order to successfully serve our rapidly expanding membership.  In February 2004 SFBAE was incorporated as a 501(c) (3), which provides us with the organizational structure we need in order to solicit donations and grow in a fiscally responsible manner.
What is program evaluation?
Program evaluation is an expanding and wide ranging profession. Typically, program evaluators conduct studies in order to learn the extent to which educational and social programs are effective, and to suggest ways to help programs become more effective.  Over the past 30 years, program evaluation has become an integral part of policy implementation and grant-making. Program evaluation may employ a variety of methods—quantitative, qualitative, or a combination of the two—but in all cases it involves collecting and making sense of data about programs and policies in ways that benefit society.
How does SFBAE support program evaluation?
SFBAE is establishing itself as a major resource for evaluators and nonprofit professionals by sponsoring professional development workshops, regional conferences, and regular meetings. In addition, SFBAE promotes professional collaboration and informal learning through networking and social events. Some of our past events have included:

  • The Business of Evaluation: How to Run an Evaluation Practice
SFBAE is also a local affiliate of the American Evaluation Association (AEA). As a national organization, AEA recognizes affiliates around the country who help promote the mission of AEA on a local level. SFBAE and AEA share the same goals of improving and promoting program evaluation.
